The environment department has published plans to overhaul packaging over the next decade, with the aim of further reducing the amounts produced and increasing the quantities recycled. Defra says that it wants to reverse the historical trend of overall packaging growth, and make packaging as resource-efficient as possible.
Government not yet a leader in sustainable procurement
Government departments are falling short of implementing measures to achieve the government target to be recognised as being among the leaders in sustainable procurement across the EU this year.
£45 million for local government
Twelve local authorities will share £45 million to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Salix Finance, the independent publicy funded company set up in 2004 to accelerate investment by the public sector in energy-efficiency technologies, is making the money available to the 12 councils to fund a range of measures, including street-lighting controls, boiler replacements and voltage-reduction equipment. The local authorities receiving the money include Aylesbury District Council, the London Borough of Bromley, Torbay Council and West Sussex County Council.
